The Solomon Islands’ police chief has told a meeting of the country’s provincial leaders the force is far more developed under the auspices of RAMSI than in previous times. Acting commissioner Peter Marshall presented his findings at last week’s Premier’s Conference.

Acting Commissioner Marshall told last week’s premier’s meeting RAMSI’s Participating Police Force had provided an invaluable service to the Royal Solomon Islands Police.

“They were basically disfunctional during the tension period and have come along in leaps and bounds over the past five years - as you would expect.”

He says both the executive, and the police men and women display pockets of excellence, but there is still work to be done in so-called middle management.

“Basically the sergeants, the staff sergeants, and some of the supervisors around the locations, need to come of age, to take ownership, to take responsibility. That is being addressed.”

Reports last week suggested RAMSI was disappointed with the police force’s level of development.
