Fiji schoolgirl sprints into Rio contention

A Fiji high school sprinter has set herself up for a surprise wildcard entry to the Rio Olympics.

Alesi Finau Finau has clocked 12.33 seconds in the open women’s 100-metre final at the Fiji National Championships.

It puts her on-track to win one of two wildcard entries for the Rio Olympics, should no-one qualify on merit.

Fiji Athletics Association senior official Joseph Rodan Jr is also head of the nation’s Olympic committee, FASANOC.

He tells Adam Connors Alesi is repeating past form, and is pushing her underperforming sprint elders Younis Bese and Sisilia Sevula for the prized spot.
