PNG capital relaxes betel nut ban adding regulated market stalls

Port Moresby is further relaxing the ban on betel nut, adding restricted areas for its sale and use at the newly renovated Koki market.

The sale and use of betel nut has led to much controversy and trouble since Papua New Guinea’s National Capital District banned selling it in October 2013.

Papua New Guinea prime minister Peter O’Neill was at the opening of the market Tuesday, where he announced specific locations for betel nut selling – known as buai – in all National Capital District markets.

Speakers: Peter O’Neill, PNG prime minister; Janet Sape, member of PNG Women in Business and NCD Liquor Licensing; Dr Timothy Sharp, Australian National University
