Israel critic needs thicker skin

On Monday’s program we heard from Antony Loewenstein, a journalist and author who claims pro-Zionist members of the Jewish community tried to silence his views that are critical of Israel.

He says some members of the community tried to stop the publication of his book, My Israel Question, with pressure on his publishers and threats made against him.

Mr Loewenstein calls himself a progressive liberal Jew and to give you a sense of his stance here’s a little of what he had to say (0:42 from Loewenstein interview, for full interview listen to: They tried to silence me says author 8.8.2006).

Well someone else who says he knows what it’s liked to be criticised for his views on the Middle East is Dr Daniel Mandel from the Middle East Forum in Philadelphia.

The organisation is a think tank whose stated goal is to define and promote American interests in the Middle East (note he’s also the director for the Zionist Organisation of America’s Centre for Middle East Policy, edited out of this intro by the EP).

Dr Mandel tells Adam Connors that Antony Loewenstein is free to express his views but should not expect to be immune from criticism.
