Does the archetypal Boston band continue to wear grotty sneekers and write mid-paced, acoustic college radio hits? ADAM CONNORS asked Dave Derby, lead singer of Boston’s The Dambuilders.

interview | Swervedriver (1995)
While the majority of the UK music scene is measuring each others’ hair length, IQ and ‘Beatleness’, some bands are actually getting down to business and writing great music. Once again it is led by Swervedriver, a band originally from Oxford but who now command one of their biggest audiences in America, the traditional graveyard of great rock pretenders.
Dystonia; Non Intentional Lifeform, Planet, October 13, 1995
I wouldn’t have expected anything less. Yes, Declan Barry, that knee-popping and hurtling juggernaut which fronts Botticelli’s Angel has grabbed hold of some fantastic speed metal merchants to form a band which gives him even more opportunity to break bones on stage – Non Intentional Lifeform, or NIL.

Superscope (CD Launch), The Loft, October 7, 1995
It was no surprise that Euro-busker Joe Algeri was standing at the door with his trusty guitar as I walked into The Loft on this night. Heck, some would say that Superscope are fundamentally the remnants of his old backing band The Stonemasons, but I forthrightly disagree with this stylistic pop-snobbery after seeing this, the launch of Superscope’s debut CD Generally Electric.

Aquarium; Atmosfear; F.U.L.L, Swanbourne Hotel, Sunday 24 September, 1995
After a fruitful day weeding the front lawn while listening to the footy on the tranny, what better way is there to cap off a bright, sunny day than a Sunday session.

Cinema Prague; Spank; Left Nut, All Ages, Halls Head Tavern, Mandurah, August 26, 1995
apologies for the word count Sue, but I grew up near and within this soul-destroying area and this project needs attention. If it doesn’t suit Revue thematics could you please pass it on, or at least the angst, to the right department. Ta.
Choices are vast for people in Perth. Oh, so you disagree?
Cry poor about the range of night life in the city and I dare you to spend a Saturday night under-age in Mandurah.
Sic; Bloom; Humbug, PICA, August 19, 1995
One of the best enterprises of the music establishment in the past few years has been the all-ages WAM initiative, Act of Youth.
Saturday’s gig at PICA again displayed their continuing success in the project which saw lollies rather than lager on the bar and local music as the drawcard, a project which Natalie from Bloom succinctly pointed out “was not really an option when I was a kiddie”.

Dick Dale; Storytime, Planet, August 8, 1995
As selections for support bands go the Storytime election was the right choice on this Tuesday eve. Neither Storytime or Dale are particularly renown for their lyrical gymnastics, instead there remains their respective command of the six-stringed instrument, albeit several generations and board shapes apart.

Rawkus; Nebula; Hateman Tribe, The Lone Star, August 4, 1995
Revline – Rawkus seconded by bridesmaid
I packed my flannelette skivvy and leather earplugs for this, the return gig by the ex-‘loudest pub band in the world’, Rawkus. With a new lead singer, bass player and a rumoured ‘more melodic sound’, the crowd were primed for what was to eventually become pretty unspectacular.

Spooky; Beaverloop; Tragic, The Loft, 22nd July, 1995
In an age where you have to squeal like Nina Hagen to be heard over the deluge of pop music releases, bands are finding it tough setting themselves apart from the norm. This is not a comment about the band Spooky, who brought us all together for their On The Quiet EP launch on Saturday night, but their friends Tragic who opened the evening to much grinding of teeth.
