interview | Money Mark and the Mo’Wax Headz (1995)

From its beginnings in the bedrooms and clubs of teenage whizz-teen James Lavelle, the Mo’Wax label is the definitive futurescape of jazz and hip-hop beats fusion. As the Mo’Wax Headz tour hits Planet on Saturday, January 6, ADAM CONNORS dusted off his grotty sneekers and spoke to Mark Ramos Nishita, aka Money Mark, on the abstract experiments within his life.

Squidfinger; Circus Murders, Seaview, December 9, 1995

The psychedelic projectors and joyously-tacky flashing Squidfinger billboards set a truely eerie atmosphere for this particular event, the CD launch of Squidfinger’s debut disco disc. And may I add that The Seaview is a fantastic summer sauna for such scintillating silliness!

No Flowers No Wedding Dress; Honeycomb, Lone Star, December 1, 1995

It didn’t take too long for Honeycomb to fill the space, unoccupied by people, with some excellent noise which would have fit in anywhere between the Sandringham in Sydney’s inner city to the Swanbourne here in Perth.

Paw, Planet, 29 November, 1995

I truely expected this Wednesday night crowd to be here for one song only, 1993’s hugely successful single Jessie (y’know, the dog song) from Paw’s debut album, Dragline. With that particular album packed with many more – may I say better – tracks, it was with great relief that the assembled were mouthing the words to most of the songs from both Dragline and Death to Traitors immediately.

Flashing Tablet; Panelbeater, Planet, November 24, 1995

In the spirit of dubbing certain days, weeks and even weekends as ‘awareness days’, I propose that Friday the 14th of November be called “World Drummers Day”. On this day, last Friday, the usual, scene-stealing guitar front instead gave way to the unsung and unsinging drummers in all their thumping glory at Planet.

Babes In Toyland; Superscope, Planet, November 19, 1995

With three-piece popsters Superscope warming up the crowd I took a note of my surroundings – there were a hell of a lot of women here to see riot grrrls Babes in Toyland and they were all ready to mosh really hard.

Psychodrama; Sage, PICA Cafe, November 17, 1995

There is nothing better than to be greeted at a venue’s door by a large group of like-minded and like-dressed folk. Just like last Friday eve, with our bright city’s gothic contingent elevating the statis of Psychodrama’s CD launch into a veritable ‘event’.

Externals, Swanbourne Hotel, November 10, 1995

The full-house lights were up early at the Swanbourne Hotel for the CD launch of the External’s second offering, Anastasia’s Hand.

With that ‘ol summer party atmosphere filling the warm night air I took my usual Externals viewing position – against the back wall and as far away from the usually-lethal noise level as possible. But hoorah! My earplugs were not needed as a perfect mix heralded a quiet External introduction to the eve.

Swervedriver; Ammonia, Planet, 6 December, 1995

It could have been described as ‘the march of the indie kids’, a packed Planet arena reverberating with the chatter of alternative music talk and the clatter of Converse sneekers. And Britian’s Swervedriver were soon to be the toast of the several generations of indie music fans squished against the rails, ears bleeding but bodies swaying.

Subvert; Bucket, The Lone Star, November 4, 1995

Bucket deserve to have their name up on a lighted marquee. Their truely Bostonian sound is sweet, cool indie rock – a shoegazing sight and sound which is largely unheralded in Perth but would break hearts if they had come from somewhere else.
