interview | Money Mark and the Mo’Wax Headz (1995)

From its beginnings in the bedrooms and clubs of teenage whizz-teen James Lavelle, the Mo’Wax label is the definitive futurescape of jazz and hip-hop beats fusion. As the Mo’Wax Headz tour hits Planet on Saturday, January 6, ADAM CONNORS dusted off his grotty sneekers and spoke to Mark Ramos Nishita, aka Money Mark, on the … Continue reading “interview | Money Mark and the Mo’Wax Headz (1995)”

Flashing Tablet; Panelbeater, Planet, November 24, 1995

In the spirit of dubbing certain days, weeks and even weekends as ‘awareness days’, I propose that Friday the 14th of November be called “World Drummers Day”. On this day, last Friday, the usual, scene-stealing guitar front instead gave way to the unsung and unsinging drummers in all their thumping glory at Planet.

Swervedriver; Ammonia, Planet, 6 December, 1995

It could have been described as ‘the march of the indie kids’, a packed Planet arena reverberating with the chatter of alternative music talk and the clatter of Converse sneekers. And Britian’s Swervedriver were soon to be the toast of the several generations of indie music fans squished against the rails, ears bleeding but bodies … Continue reading “Swervedriver; Ammonia, Planet, 6 December, 1995”

interview | Swervedriver (1995)

While the majority of the UK music scene is measuring each others’ hair length, IQ and ‘Beatleness’, some bands are actually getting down to business and writing great music. Superscope (CD Launch), The Loft, October 7, 1995

It was no surprise that Euro-busker Joe Algeri was standing at the door with his trusty guitar as I walked into The Loft on this night. Heck, some would say that Superscope are fundamentally the remnants of his old backing band The Stonemasons, but I forthrightly disagree with this stylistic pop-snobbery after seeing this, the … Continue reading “Superscope (CD Launch), The Loft, October 7, 1995”

Dick Dale; Storytime, Planet, August 8, 1995

As selections for support bands go the Storytime election was the right choice on this Tuesday eve. Neither Storytime or Dale are particularly renown for their lyrical gymnastics, instead there remains their respective command of the six-stringed instrument, albeit several generations and board shapes apart.

Rawkus; Nebula; Hateman Tribe, The Lone Star, August 4, 1995

Revline – Rawkus seconded by bridesmaid I packed my flannelette skivvy and leather earplugs for this, the return gig by the ex-‘loudest pub band in the world’, Rawkus. With a new lead singer, bass player and a rumoured ‘more melodic sound’, the crowd were primed for what was to eventually become pretty unspectacular.

interview | Summersault ’95 – The Local Assault

As well as the stunning array of glamorous, international musical megastars strolling the catwalk at Summersault, Fremantle Oval January 7, a local contingent of glamorous musical megastars will put forth their noise on the same stages. ADAM CONNORS spoke to Perth bands Jebediah, Bluetile Lounge, Outstation, Wormfarm and Thermos Cardy before the big day arrived.
