Hi there
I just wanted everyone to know that Richard and I are safe and well and were fortunate enough to be in Goa, on the SW coast of India when the tidal waves hit parts of the country yesterday morning.
Everyone here was in total shock yesterday as they watched the news unfold during the day – we hope that none of you have any friends or relatives who were caught up in this awful tragedy.
Palolem, where we are staying, was relatively unscathed, though mass panic hit the town around 10pm last night when the tides surged in, swamping the beach in a matter of seconds, washing beach-side restaurant tables and chairs away and sending some fishing boats crashing into bar fronts. Within seconds of it happening, tourists and locals alike literally ran for the hills causing a stampede, with a few fights breaking out.
After leaving the main drag a handful of us trekked in the moonlight together through back lanes and paddy fields and finally managed to reach a road to grab a lift on the back of a truck which was hurtling at top speed towards higher ground.
If yesterday’s events weren’t trippy enough, we fully realised the scale of the strangeness when we recognised our fellow escapee and truck passenger to be none other than the “Buffalo Stance” legend herself, Neneh Cherry.
Who is very nice BTW. And whose brother really is called Eagle-Eye.
Best wishes for the NY folks,
Love,
Rachel and Richard
