Australia defends India uranium sales

The Australian foreign minister Alexander Downer has defended Australia’s new agreement to export uranium to India.

Speaking in the southern city of Melbourne, Mr Downer said Australia’s energy exports may help it exert strategic influence over emerging powers like India and China.

Earlier this week Mr Downer also confirmed Australia is in negotiations to export uranium to Russia.

Australia’s moves to expand uranium exports to India, which is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, have been strongly criticised by opposition parties.
