Anniversary: end of Soviet Communist Party

For the fifteen countries that compose the former Soviet Union, memories of August 1991 bring back a variety of emotions… a sense of elation for some and for others, a sense of loss.

In the last ten days of August, fifteen years ago, the Communist Party of the Soviet Union lost its leader, lost its grip on the republics, was outlawed by the Supreme Soviet and, by December, the great superpower of the USSR was no more.

For this week’s Anniversary, Adam Connors takes us through these events of fifteen years ago that continue to resound throughout the world.
