Australian soldiers in Iraq

It’s been an emotional week for the Australian Defence Force and its 14-hundred personnel in Iraq.

As Anzac Day drew nearer last month, the grim news emerged that Australia had suffered its first casualty in Iraq with the death of Private Jake Kovco.

The significance of Anzac Day suddenly took upon new meaning as Australia’s most recent war claimed its first life.

For this week’s Dateline on SBS Television, veteran foreign correspondent David Brill — who’s covered Australians at war since Vietnam — secured a rare invitation to travel with the Vice Chief of the Defence Force, General Ken Gillespie, on tour in Iraq.

David Brill reveals to Adam Connors the current role, and the morale, of Australia’s soldiers currently stationed in Iraq.
