Filipino death squads target fringe parties

According to research by marginal political parties in The Philippines, and backed up by human rights organisations, a wave of political and journalistic killings since 2001 has surpassed that of the corrupt Marcos dictatorship of the 1970s and 80s.

The Philippine Daily Inquirer puts the number at 244 political assassinations, and 47 journalists, following Monday’s (31/7) targeting of two Bayan Muna party members and a tabloid journalist.

On that same day, a member of the Bayan Muna party, and of The Philippines Congress, Joel Virador, spoke to journalists at SBS.

He informed the assembled journalists of the killings that morning, and as Adam Connors reports, spoke frankly about where to apportion the blame.
