Tropical cyclone Gene appears to have wiped-out food crops in Vanuatu’s southern islands. A chartered plane carrying disaster officials and Red Cross representatives flew over the southern islands of Futuna and Aneityum yesterday to survey the damage.

In Fiji, one person has died from typhoid and more cases of the disease are emerging just days after tropical cyclone Gene swept through the country. The victim was a 33-year-old woman from the northern village of Nailou.
