Mental Notes: September 2003

SYDNEY–Well, first impressions last, mehopesnot. If I don’t learn some football terminology quickly I’m in the “sin bin”, or something. It’s just strange that my AFL (that’s Aust Rules Football) team is actually in the finals so I’m supposed to be hyped. Even so, I’m peeved that Malthouse is the coach, or something, he being the ex-West Coast eagles coach that I hated back when I was last in Oz five years ago. Diversion http://www.poynter.org . No football.

ga tha magpois! i think that’s the correct pronunciation. i’m very much struggling to get my head and mouth around football vocab here, which i swear is what everyone talks about in sydvegas and australia in general. it’s one or the other code of football, then there’s another code of football’s world cup next month – and it’s not even what the rest of the world considers football. yep, i’m sooo on top of it all. but i do have a lovely wee residence with wooden floorboards and a dartboard and great indie radio stations and big doonas, not duvets or comforters. i thought i was going to get a nosebleed walking briskly in the morning air this week due to nearly no humidity. i did brush my nose to check. and i didn’t stoop on the train. and there’s this thing called eye contact – mate, ya havta chroy it. saw ben lee at the metro last night with housemate em, who really is a noisy, squirly brit girl who kept saying “he’s sweeet” to my loud laughter at his pure dorkishness. but the keyboard girl with the chirpy casio setting and tamborine was sweet. oz band you am i is the main musical meal next week, all lads with smashing guitars and chainsaw-proof sideburns. have i mentioned food? as i said, i am going to get very, very fat. and proud. as it seems fat, proud men have stunning accompaniments here. though i need to get a handle on football i suppose, as least one of the codes. jobwise i’m yet to put in the hard yards, though the town is really kicking. “too much media” really, even em says. radio fbi is absolutely amazing, glad to see that there really is an audience who want sounds that are challenging and completely obscure, professionally presented. spent the first week catching up wth too many heathens, though successfully so in a financially secure hedonism sorta way. blue skies and nothing but, with more than a twinge of cold in the air. imagine bondi beach two sundays ago in the sun, but with teeth chattering, then fish n chips on the boardwalk. ah, all this, and still i miss the posse and a whole lot of outward-looking scope that really is lacking a lot here. but we have football, three codes maaate. ga tha magpois! adm xxx

SYDNEY–Ah yes, as you see I’ve arrived. The house is super cute and Emma and I are scoping out the neighborhood (or rather, “neighbourhood”, now I can use UK English again.) More soon once I have a new mobile number and the like. Oh, and it’s actually cold here! Forgotten what temperature change is like. Site watch: http://www.poynter.org/
